How many US senators went on to serve as POTUS

As of September 2021, nine U.S. senators have gone on to serve as President of the United States:

1. John Tyler - He served as a U.S. senator from Virginia from 1827 to 1836. Tyler was the tenth President of the United States and served from 1841 to 1845.

2. Franklin Pierce - A U.S. senator from New Hampshire from 1837 to 1842, Pierce became the fourteenth President of the United States and served from 1853 to 1857.

3. Andrew Johnson - Johnson's tenure as a U.S. senator from Tennessee lasted from 1857 to 1862. He became the seventeenth President of the United States following Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865.

4. Benjamin Harrison - Harrison served as a U.S. senator from Indiana from 1881 to 1887. He was subsequently elected as the twenty-third President of the United States and served from 1889 to 1893.

5. Warren G. Harding - Harding's term as a U.S. senator from Ohio began in 1915 and ended in 1921 when he became the twenty-ninth President of the United States. He served as president until his death in 1923.

6. Harry S. Truman - Truman served as a U.S. senator from Missouri from 1935 to 1945. Following Franklin D. Roosevelt's death, Truman became the thirty-third President of the United States and served from 1945 to 1953.

7. John F. Kennedy - Kennedy was a U.S. senator from Massachusetts from 1953 to 1960. He became the thirty-fifth President of the United States and served from 1961 until his assassination in 1963.

8. Lyndon B. Johnson - Johnson served as a U.S. senator from Texas from 1949 to 1961. Following Kennedy's assassination, he became the thirty-sixth President of the United States and served from 1963 to 1969.

9. Barack Obama - Obama served as a U.S. senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008. He went on to become the forty-fourth President of the United States and served from 2009 to 2017.
