2. Waxing Crescent: A small sliver of the moon is visible on the right side.
3. First Quarter: Half of the moon is visible and illuminated on the right side.
4. Waxing Gibbous: More than half, but not fully, of the moon is visible and illuminated on the right side.
5. Full Moon: The entire face of the moon is visible and illuminated.
6. Waning Gibbous: More than half, but not fully, of the moon is visible and illuminated on the left side.
7. Third Quarter: Half of the moon is visible and illuminated on the left side.
8. Waning Crescent: A small sliver of the moon is visible on the left side.

These phases are determined by the relative positions of the sun, Earth, and moon, which cause different portions of the moon's surface to be illuminated by sunlight as it orbits the Earth.
