Sugar originated in both Africa and Southeast Asia. Sugarcane, the primary source of sugar, is believed to have originated in New Guinea and then spread to other parts of Southeast Asia. It was then brought to the Middle East by Arab traders and eventually made its way to Europe through trade routes. From Europe, sugar cultivation quickly spread to the Americas, including North America.
