The characteristic of reproduction is required for the species to survive but does not have to apply to an individual. This is because for a species to continue existing, there needs to be a process of reproduction in which individuals produce offspring that inherit their genetic traits and continue the species lineage. While an individual may not necessarily reproduce, as long as there is a sufficient number of individuals within a species reproducing, the species can still survive.
