I think the differences between federal, unitary, and confederal systems were important to the founders because they wanted to establish a strong central government that could unify the states while also protecting their autonomy. They sought a balance of power, where the central government had enough authority to govern effectively, but not so much to infringe on state rights and sovereignty.
