As part of the treaty ending the Spanish-American War, the Platt Amendment said

that the United States would maintain control over Cuba's foreign affairs and have the right to intervene in Cuban affairs to protect American interests. It also specified that Cuba could not enter into any agreements with foreign powers that might compromise its independence or give any foreign power control over its territory. The amendment also allowed for the establishment of American naval bases in Cuba, which ultimately led to the creation of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.
