The microscope and its improvement allowed scientists to observe cells in much greater detail, leading to the discovery of their structural and functional characteristics. This increased knowledge of cells helped support and refine the cell theory, providing evidence to show that cells are the basic units of life and that all living organisms are composed of cells.
