During the Cold War, the command of South Korea was in the hands of President Syngman Rhee. North Korea was led by Kim Il-sung, who was initially appointed as the Premier and later became the President. Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), was under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek during most of the Cold War period.
