Tecumseh, a great Shawnee chief, sought to form a confederation of Native American tribes in the early 19th century. His primary reason for doing so was to resist and prevent the further encroachment of American settlers on Native American lands. Tecumseh believed that only by uniting the various tribes, sharing resources, and coordinating military efforts could they effectively fend off the advance of white settlers and preserve their way of life. He envisioned a pan-Indian alliance that would serve as a formidable force against the expansionist policies of the United States government.
