The Incas united their empire by using roads and messengers called "chasquis" to communicate across long distances. They also built strong fortresses called "tambo" to protect their lands. The emperor, called the "Sapa Inca," had lots of power and made sure everyone followed the same laws and customs to keep the empire united.
