In my journal, I talked about how we use numbers to classify things. One system is even and odd numbers. We use numbers to see if they can be divided by 2 evenly. Even numbers can be divided by 2, but odd numbers can't. Another system is prime and composite numbers. Prime numbers have only two factors, 1 and itself, while composite numbers have more than two factors. We use numbers to see if they have any other factors besides 1 and itself.
I read two of my classmates' posts and they described classifying animals by their body coverings and shapes. One student said that numbers help classify animals by body coverings like fur, skin, or feathers. Another student said that numbers help classify animals by their shapes like vertebrates (animals with backbones) and invertebrates (animals without backbones).
