Slash-and-burn is a farming method in which vegetation is burned in order to enrich poor soil. This technique involves cutting down vegetation, letting it dry, and then setting it on fire. The burned vegetation adds nutrients to the soil, making it more fertile and suitable for farming. Once the soil is enriched, crops can be planted and cultivated successfully. This method has been used by many indigenous cultures, including the Olmec and Maya civilizations in Middle America. Slash-and-burn agriculture allows communities to adapt to their environment and grow crops in areas where the soil may not naturally be fertile.
