The Plebeians demanded a written code of law. This was during the time of the Roman Republic when the Plebeians, who were the common people of Rome, sought to have laws written down in order to prevent the Patricians, who were the aristocratic elite, from interpreting traditional customs to their own advantage. This demand led to the creation of the Law of the Twelve Tables around 450 BC, which became the foundation of Roman law.
