The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is most closely related to the breakup of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the USSR, tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region escalated into a full-scale war, largely because both countries claimed the territory. While Nagorno-Karabakh was internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, it had a majority ethnic Armenian population that sought independence from Azerbaijan and ultimately desired unification with Armenia.
