In math, a function is a relationship between two sets of numbers, where each input (or "x" value) is paired with exactly one output (or "y" value).

This table shows a function because each day of the week (input) is paired with a specific number of children in the car (output). For example, on Sunday there are 2 children in the car and on Monday there are 4 children in the car. Each day has a unique number of children in the car, which satisfies the definition of a function.
