Coral predominantly gets its energy from the sun through a process called photosynthesis, which is carried out by the symbiotic algae living inside the coral. These algae, known as zooxanthellae, capture sunlight and convert it into energy through photosynthesis. It is estimated that coral can receive up to 90% of its energy requirements through this process.
