Hello! Let’s spend a little time together talking about photosynthesis. When walking outside, take notice of the bushes, the trees, and grasses. What do they all have in common? They all use photosynthesis to make their own food. With the energy from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and water, photosynthetic organisms produce oxygen as a waste product and glucose, a 6-carbon sugar used as food. Photosynthesis occurs in the green parts of plants found in the leaves. Inside of plant cells are tiny organelles called chloroplasts that contain the green pigment, chlorophyll. The chlorophyll absorbs wavelength of light necessary to start the process of photosynthesis. Let’s look a little deeper into this leaf and see how this process works. Photosynthesis is divided into two separate sets of reactions. Inside the chloroplast, the light dependent reactions take the energy from sunlight and water to form ATP and NADPH which them go to the Light independent reactions, also known as the Calvin Cycle, to take carbon dioxide and turn it into glucose and releases oxygen as a waste product. It is important to understand and know the chemical equation for photosynthesis. It takes 6 molecules of carbon dioxide and 6 molecules of water, along with sunlight, to for 6 molecules of oxygen and one molecule of glucose. As a reminder, the glucose is used as energy for photosynthetic organisms like this tree. These are also known as autotrophs. Organisms that need to ingest food for energy, such as this giraffe and even you and me are known as heterotrophs. Heterotrophs get their energy from eating autotrophs or other organisms that eat autotrophs. Here is a fun fact: The oxygen we breath is produced by photosynthesis, and phytoplankton in the ocean produce most of the world’s atmospheric oxygen.
