My America is Me

A. Gautam

My America is loud and proud like me

When I close my eyes, in the map I see
Crooked corners and lines as thick as walls
But also rivers that pass through and waterfalls

5 My America stumbles but rises too
It holds my hands and lets me do
The muddy work of lifting my country
My America is beautiful like me

My America is young but also deep
10 My America has promises to keep
The journey is far, the hills are steep
But my America and I will not sleep

The poet uses personification in the second stanza to describe America's attempt to resist others.

To arrive at this answer, we need to first understand what personification is. Personification is a literary device in which an inanimate object or abstract concept is given human attributes or characteristics. In the second stanza of the poem, the poet describes America as "stumbles but rises too" and "holds my hands and lets me do." These lines suggest that America is an active and resilient entity that can stumble and rise, as well as provide support and guidance.

By considering the options given, we can eliminate options A and B. Option C, providing directions, does not accurately describe America's actions in the poem. The most appropriate option is option D, resist others. This is evident in the lines "crooked corners and lines as thick as walls" which suggest America's resistance to conforming to the expectations of others.
