Unprofessionalism:
Unprofessionalism is seen as any conduct, practice, behavior, disposition, demeanor, norms, values and beliefs that contravenes and conflict with existing etiquettes of social institutions and individuals. Further, they are actions that hurt, distract, seen as inappropriate, pose danger, pose health risks, seen as unethical, immoral, inhuman, distorts human behavior, causes discomfort/disharmony and negatively influence deplorable outcomes.
According to the teaching profession, any actions or behavior of a teacher that conflicts or is outside of the TSC/TA code of ethics and its etiquettes that cause or bring about results such as the ones listed above is seen as unprofessional.
This summary briefly states ten observable unprofessional behaviors that students have shown within the school vicinity and will strategize some measure that can help to mitigate these behaviors when becoming a teacher in the near future.
The ten unprofessional behaviors are then categorized into three main categories.
1. Unprofessional Grooming
This constitute of students wearing cut jeans to school, students wearing jerseys to class, students with dread logs, students carrying k2 bags, and students chewing betelnut. These behaviors listed are unprofessional behavior that makes the personal grooming and appearance of an individual looking untidy. The school administration and the teaching staffs must be very strict in dressing codes and grooming.
2. Police matter
Smoking marijuana and swearing are two bad habits practiced by professional students. These are unprofessional conducts and are among the forbidden don’ts in any established organizations and it’s a police matter if caught using and practicing. Strict policies and regulations must be established in order to minimize and eradicate the use and practice of these two unprofessional behaviors. The penalties imposed on those practicing must be severe to impart fear to the general public and those practicing it.
3. Disrespectful Behaviors.
Finally speaking vernaculars, playing loud music and speaking tokpisin (pidgin) are unprofessional behaviors practiced by educated elites in this institution. These show lack of self respect and respect for others. This is not a market place or a disco place where we can speak vernacular or playing loud music. This is a school and it must be treated as one.
Unprofessionalism is a concern in every organization and the need to do away with unprofessionalism is everyone’s responsibility. In order to mitigate such unprofessional behaviors in the next generations, the teachers and the disciplinary committee must be very strict in their duties by imposing severe penalties to those who practice such behavior so that people will fear and respect the rules and regulations set.
