The leading cause of the end of the open range in Texas was the expansion of railroads and the resulting increase in demand for land for farming and ranching. This led to the fencing off of previously open grazing land and the establishment of private property rights. Additionally, severe droughts and overgrazing contributed to the decline of the open range system.
