This process is called photosynthesis and it is performed by plants, algae, and some bacteria. During photosynthesis, these organisms use energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (sugar) and oxygen. The glucose is then used as a source of energy and building blocks for the organism. Oxygen is released into the atmosphere, which is essential for the survival of most animal life. Photosynthesis sustains life on Earth by producing food and oxygen, and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
