The plasma membrane, also known as the cell membrane, is composed mainly of phospholipids. Phospholipids are specialized lipids that have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and hydrophobic (water-fearing) tails. They form a lipid bilayer structure with the hydrophilic heads facing the watery environments both inside and outside the cell, and the hydrophobic tails facing each other in the middle. This lipid bilayer provides a barrier that separates the cell's internal environment from the external environment, controlling the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
