Humans can accidentally or intentionally introduce invasive species into an ecosystem by transporting them on ships, planes, or vehicles, or by releasing them into a new environment. An example is the zebra mussel, which was introduced into the Great Lakes via ballast water from ships, and negatively impacted the native aquatic species by filtering large quantities of plankton and disrupting food webs.
