What kids of governments did Ancient Rome have?

Ancient Rome had several forms of government throughout its history. Initially, it was ruled by kings in a monarchy system. After the overthrow of the last king, a republic was established, which lasted for nearly 500 years. The Roman Republic had two consuls as its leaders, and power was held by aristocrats and wealthy landowners. Eventually, the Roman Empire was established, with an autocratic leader known as an emperor who held absolute power.
