After water percolates down into an aquifer for groundwater recharge, it can either be stored in the pore spaces of the rock or soil, or it can flow through the aquifer, eventually reaching a discharge point such as a spring or stream. The water in the aquifer can also slowly move underground, sometimes for long distances, before reaching a discharge point. Additionally, the water in the aquifer can also be pumped out by wells and used for various purposes such as irrigation and drinking water supply.
