Coffee Around the World

Many people in the United States start their morning with a cup of coffee. Often this coffee is made using an automatic coffeemaker.
Coffee is also popular in other parts of the world. However, the ways of making coffee vary. from country to country. Just as people around the world speak different languages, they also make their coffee in different ways. Here are the methods for making a cup of coffee in three countries.

Italy
Italians make and serve coffee in several ways. The basic cup of coffee is called an espresso. Espresso is a strong coffee made using a special machine. Italians drink their espresso quickly. They add hot, foamy milk to an espresso to make a different drink called a cappuccino. In Italy the cappuccino is a popular drink in the morning.

Turkey
Turkey is another country that is famous for its coffee. To make Turkish coffee, people first crush the coffee beans into a powder. Then they add the powder to water and boil it in a special brass pot called a cezve. Making coffee this way results in a thick, strong drink. Turks drink this coffee slowly from very small cups.

Ethiopia
Some people think that Ethiopia is where coffee was invented. People in Ethiopia make and drink coffee during a special ceremony called buna. At the beginning of the ceremony, someone roasts green coffee beans in a hot pan.
Everyone in the ceremony enjoys the smell of the cooking beans. Someone crushes the roasted coffee beans and puts the powder in a special clay pot called a jebena. Then the person adds water and boils the coffee over a fire.
When the coffee is ready, someone pours it into small cups and serves it with sugar, salt, or butter. Buna is not just about making coffee. It is a tradition that brings family and friends together.
