What is meander migration?

Meander migration refers to the gradual shifting of river meanders, or bends in rivers, over time. This occurs as the river erodes the outer bank of a meander and deposits sediment on the inside of the bend, which causes the bend to become more pronounced. As this process continues, the river channel may eventually cut through the narrow neck of land between two successive meanders, resulting in the formation of a new channel segment and the abandonment of the old meander loop. Meander migration is a significant process in shaping river landscapes and can have important implications for flood control and river management.
