During World War II, Georgia (the country) was occupied by the Soviet Union. The Georgian soldiers were drafted into the Soviet military and fought for the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. Georgia also served as a key transportation hub for supplies and troops traveling to the front lines. Additionally, several Georgians living abroad, such as the famous writer Ilia Chavchavadze, actively supported the Allied war effort.
