What is a copyright?

A copyright is a legal protection that grants an author of an original work exclusive rights to control how their work is used and distributed. This includes the right to make copies, distribute copies, perform the work publicly, and create derivative works based on the original. These rights are granted automatically upon creation of the work and protected by law to prevent others from using, copying or reproducing the work without permission. In educational technology, copyright law is important to understand to ensure that digital materials like software, videos, images, and text can be used legally and ethically.
