The political party that was created to oppose Irish (especially Catholic) immigrants was the Know-Nothing Party. They were also known as the American Party and were active in the 1850s. The party was anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic, and its members sought to limit immigration and naturalization and to increase the period of residence required for foreign-born persons to become citizens.
