Eastern and Western Christians had different views on who should lead the Church. Eastern Christians believed that the Patriarch of Constantinople should lead the Church, while Western Christians believed that the Pope of Rome should lead the Church. This disagreement eventually led to the Great Schism of 1054, which divided the Church into the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
