John the Baptist had doubts about Jesus being the Messiah. He had heard of Jesus' miracles and teachings, but he was expecting a more powerful and triumphant figure. He was expecting a political leader who would overthrow the Roman government and restore the kingdom of Israel. He sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the one they were expecting. Jesus answered them by referring to his miracles and teachings, which confirmed his identity as the Messiah.
