The state of Texas did little to help its citizens during the Great Depression because of its limited resources and the fact that it was a largely rural state. The state government was unable to provide the same level of assistance as other states, and the federal government's New Deal programs were not as effective in Texas as they were in other states. Additionally, the state's economy was heavily reliant on the oil industry, which was hit hard by the Depression.
