The human cost of European exploration and colonization was immense. Indigenous populations were decimated by disease, warfare, and displacement. Many were enslaved and forced to work in mines, plantations, and other labor-intensive industries. In addition, the cultural and spiritual practices of many indigenous peoples were destroyed or suppressed.
