Charles Darwin published his book On the Origin of Species in 1859. His theory of descent with modification through natural selection proposed that species evolved over time through a process of natural selection, where organisms with advantageous traits were more likely to survive and reproduce. He also proposed a positive correlation between the complexity of an organism and its age, as well as the existence of transitional fossils that showed the gradual evolution of species.
