The Loihi volcano formed as a result of the Pacific Plate moving over the Hawaiian hotspot. The hotspot is a stationary source of magma that rises up through the Earth's crust and creates a volcanic island. As the Pacific Plate moves over the hotspot, the magma continues to rise and form a new volcano. Over time, the volcano builds up and eventually becomes an island.
