The Ogallala Aquifer is at risk due to over-pumping of groundwater for agricultural and industrial uses, as well as from climate change, which has caused decreased precipitation and increased evaporation. Additionally, the Ogallala Aquifer is threatened by pollution from agricultural runoff, urban development, and oil and gas production.
