In the first of a school, there were 116 student who took Mathematics and science. They all passed at least one subject and 34 passed both subject. If twice as many passed Science as Mathematics, find how many passed in Mathematics only

Make a Venn diagram with two intersecting circles, M and S, that represent the students passing.

label the intersection as 34
let the number passing Math be x and the number passing science be y
then those passing only math would be x - 34 and those passing only science would be y - 34. Fill in those values.

x-34 + 34 + y-34 = 116
x + y = 150

also you told me y = 2x
sub into the other equation
x + 2x = 150
x = 50

so 50-34 or 16 passed math only
(you can fill in the Venn diagram with actual numbers and verify the results)
