Slove each system by substitution.
4x = y - 1
6x - 2y = -3
I have already attempted this problem and couldn't figure out what I should do.
I came out with 4x + 1 = 3x + 1.5
I think this looks right because our teacher told us that for this specific problem that we should get a decimal. But now I don't know where to go next...... Thanks!

I know but wouldn't you have to go through confusing fractions and multiply by fractions to get a whole number of x? I am trying to follow the teachers directions which do not include fractions.......

multiply the entire thing by 2 to eliminate the decimal:
(4x + 1 = 3x + 1.5)*2
8x-6x=3-2
now solve for x. Then solve for y by substitution.

x = 0.5
4x = 2
4(0.5) = y - 1
+1 on both sides...
y = 3!
Thanks!

To solve the system of equations by substitution, we need to isolate one variable in one equation and substitute it into the other equation. Let's go step by step.
1. Start with the first equation:
4x = y - 1
2. Isolate y by adding 1 on both sides:
4x + 1 = y
3. Now substitute this value of y in the second equation:
6x - 2(4x + 1) = -3
Simplify the equation:
6x - 8x - 2 = -3
-2x - 2 = -3
4. Solve for x:
Add 2 to both sides:
-2x - 2 + 2 = -3 + 2
-2x = -1
Divide by -2:
-2x / -2 = -1 / -2
x = 1/2
5. Now substitute this value of x back into the first equation to find y:
4(1/2) = y - 1
2 = y - 1
Add 1 to both sides:
2 + 1 = y - 1 + 1
y = 3
6. Therefore, the solution to the system of equations is x = 1/2 and y = 3.
In your attempt, it seems you made an error in the step of substituting the value of y into the second equation. The correct substitution should be:
6x - 2(4x + 1) = -3
6x - 8x - 2 = -3
From there, you can continue solving as described above.
