E. the power plant, where gas is burned to release energy
The mitochondrion is often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell because it is where cellular respiration takes place, converting food molecules into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the main energy source for the cell. Just like a power plant releases energy from burning gas, the mitochondrion releases energy from food molecules.
