a. The environment in Kansas has a big effect on people and how people affect the environment. For example, the dry climate in Kansas means that farmers have to use water more carefully and maybe even try to find new ways to water their crops. On the other hand, people in Kansas have built cities and roads, which changes the environment by taking up space where animals used to live. So the environment and people in Kansas kind of have like a give and take relationship where they both affect each other.
b. If I was an African American family living in the South back in the old days, I would totally think about moving to Kansas. The Governor said that life and property is just as safe for Black people as it is for White people, which is cool. Plus, they said that Black children can get the same education as White children, so that's really nice. Seems like there's good opportunities in Kansas for Black families, so why not take a chance and make a fresh start up there?
c. So, like, back in the Dust Bowl days in Kansas, farmers changed how they did things to help the environment. They started using this thing called aquifer irrigation, which is like watering the crops with underground water instead of just from rain. This helped save the soil and stuff. And they also started doing crop rotation, which means they planted different crops each year to keep the soil healthy. So all the changes in farming practices were because of the Dust Bowl messing up the environment.
d. The two Supreme Court rulings, Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education, were kinda different. Like, in Plessy v. Ferguson, they said that as long as White and Black people had the same rights, it was okay to have segregation. But in Brown v. Board of Education, they said even if the schools were the same, segregating Black kids from White kids wasn't fair under the law. So like, one ruling was okay with segregation, but the other one said it wasn't cool.
e. If I could interview the writers of the Kansas Bill of Rights, I would ask them stuff like, "How did you come up with the idea that all political power should be in the hands of the people?" because that's a really big idea. I would also ask, "Why did you think it was important for the legislature to not give special privileges?" because that's kinda interesting. And I would ask, "What do you hope will happen because of the Bill of Rights you wrote?" because maybe they had a big dream for Kansas.
