The article, "A Teen and a Trolley Reveal Society's Dark Side," is about a girl who asks people what they would do in the trolley problem. The trolley problem is a scenario where a runaway trolley is headed toward five people. If you do nothing, those five people die, but if you flick a lever, one person dies. The girl in the article makes the one person that can be killed a woman whose identity would vary. The woman could be wealthy, attractive, plain, dressed as a waitress, or sitting in a wheelchair. The girl used this to identify how bias can affect everyday decisions.
In the article, "A Teen and a Trolley Reveal Society's Dark Side," I agree with the girl that biases are usually hidden and that we might not realize they impact our interactions or decisions. Key ideas of the story are that some people can be good, and that all people can have a dark side in the trolley problem. I noticed in the article that the girl says that her results might show us some of our darkest behaviors, but I don’t agree a lot with this because the trolley problem does not have much of a positive outcome. I agree very little with the darkest behaviors because of the results that her survey got; only 24 percent would sacrifice the wealthy woman, but the numbers jumped to 74 if she was in a wheelchair. This shows how bias can interact with our decisions. Even with these results though, I still do not agree with her much because even though the results show how people may have a dark side, there was no correct answer really, and even if the kindest person was put into this situation, they would not be able to control it.
