The information in the genetics unit I best understood was the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes. The topic that was most challenging for me to understand was how mutations can have different effects on organisms.
A strategy I could use to determine the factors that influence plant growth is to conduct experiments in different environments with controlled variables to see how they impact plant growth.
One topic in this unit I would like to learn more about is how genetic factors and environmental factors interact to determine the traits and growth of an organism.
Pairs of key words and their relationships:
1. Gene and chromosome: Genes are sections of chromosomes that contain genetic information.
2. Genotype and phenotype: Genotype determines the phenotype, or observable traits, of an organism.
3. Meiosis and transfer of traits: Meiosis is the process by which traits are passed down to the next generation.
4. Structural changes and proteins: Structural changes to genes can affect the proteins they produce.
5. Mutations and effects: Mutations can be harmful, beneficial, or have no effect on an organism.
By reviewing previous assessments in this unit and explaining concepts to others, I can solidify my understanding of genetics. I can also rework problems and make a list of evidence for how genetic and environmental factors influence the growth of organisms to further enhance my learning.
