d. they are rearranged
During the reaction, the atoms of Fe and O_(2) are rearranged to form FeO_(3). The Fe atoms combine with the O_(2) atoms to form FeO_(3), so the atoms are not lost, do not maintain their properties as they are combined in a new compound, and the mass remains the same as it is a conservation of mass.
