During the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese emerged victorious in two significant areas:
1. Naval Battles: The Japanese Navy, led by Admiral Togo Heihachiro, achieved decisive victories against the Russian Navy. The most significant of these was the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905, where the Japanese fleet destroyed or captured almost the entire Russian Baltic Fleet. This victory solidified Japanese control of the seas and established its dominance as a naval power in the region.
2. Land Warfare: The Japanese also achieved success in land warfare, particularly in Manchuria. The Battle of Port Arthur, which took place from August 1904 to January 1905, saw the Japanese besiege and eventually capture the heavily fortified Russian naval base of Port Arthur. This victory provided the Japanese with a strategic foothold in Manchuria and opened up the possibility of further land advances.
These two victories ultimately led to the Treaty of Portsmouth in September 1905, which ended the war and resulted in significant territorial gains for Japan, including control over Korea and parts of Manchuria.
