Spina bifida has been known since ancient times. The earliest known description of the condition dates back to the 4th century BC, when Hippocrates wrote about a child with a “cleft spine”. The term “spina bifida” was first used in the 17th century by the Italian anatomist and surgeon, Gabriele Falloppio.
