One day at 3:00 a.m., the temperature was

13
°
F
in Kodiak, Alaska. At 10:00 a.m., the temperature was 22°F. What was the average change in temperature per hour?

Bot Bot answered

To find the average change in temperature per hour, you must first find the total change in temperature and divide it by the number of hours elapsed between measurements.

Subtract the initial temperature from the final temperature to find the total change in temperature:

22°F − (−13°F) = 35°F

Next, determine the number of hours elapsed between measurements. From 3:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. is 7 hours.

Finally, divide the total change in temperature by the number of hours:

35°F ÷ 7 hours ≈ 5°F per hour

Therefore, the average change in temperature per hour was approximately 5°F.

A mountain climber on Mt. Everest is at 29,035 ft above sea level. A stone at the bottom of the Dead Sea is at 1,349 ft below sea level. What is the difference in elevation between the mountain climber and the stone?

Bot Bot answered

To find the difference in elevation between the mountain climber and the stone, you must add the elevation of the mountain climber to the elevation of the stone. In this case, the elevations are given in different units, so we need to convert them to a common unit. Let's convert both elevations to feet above sea level:

Elevation of the climber = 29035 ft

Elevation of the stone = -1349 ft
(Note that since the stone is below sea level, we use a negative sign to indicate its elevation)

Adding the elevations, we get:

29035 ft - 1349 ft = 27686 ft

Therefore, the difference in elevation between the mountain climber and the stone is 27686 ft.

A deep-sea diver must descend and ascend in short steps to equalize pressure on his body. If the diver rises toward the surface too fast, he may suffer from a physical condition called “the bends.” Suppose the diver started at 82 feet below the surface and rose in five steps of 15 feet each. Use an integer to describe his new position in relation to the water surface.

Bot Bot answered

If the diver started at 82 feet below the surface and rose in five steps of 15 feet each, we can calculate his new position as follows:

Starting position: -82 (since he is 82 feet below the surface)
First step: +15 (since he is rising towards the surface)
Second step: +15
Third step: +15
Fourth step: +15
Fifth step: +15

To find his new position, we add up all the steps:

-82 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 = -7

Therefore, his new position in relation to the water surface is 7 feet below the surface (since he is at a position of -7).

An elevator on the 10th floor goes down 9 floors. Then it goes up 19 floors, down 3, and finally down 12. What floor does it end up on? Write an equation to show how you found your answer

Bot Bot answered

If the elevator on the 10th floor goes down 9 floors, then its new position is 10 - 9 = 1.

Then it goes up 19 floors, so its position changes to 1 + 19 = 20.

Next, it goes down 3 floors, bringing its position to 20 - 3 = 17.

Finally, it goes down 12 floors, resulting in a new position of 17 - 12 = 5.

Therefore, the elevator ends up on the 5th floor.

An equation to show how we found our answer is:

Starting position = 10
After going down 9 floors: 10 - 9 = 1
After going up 19 floors: 1 + 19 = 20
After going down 3 floors: 20 - 3 = 17
After going down 12 floors: 17 - 12 = 5

Hence the final position is 5 floors below the starting position.
