1 1/3 x 1/2 =4/3-1/2
4/3= 8/6
1/2= 3/6
5/6 cups is that right answer

cookies ----> 1/2 cups of sugar, needs 4/3 cups

3*cookies ----> still only has 1/2 cups of sugar, need 4 cups

so she need an additional 4 - 1/2 cups or 7/2 cups of sugar

She needs1 1/3 cup for one cookie.

1 1/3 = 1 + 1 / 3 = 3 / 3 + 1 / 3 = 4 / 3

If she triple the recipe she needs:

3 ∙ 1 1/3 = 3 ∙ 4 / 3 = 4 cups for three cookies.

She has 1 / 2 cup of sugar so she need:

4 - 1 / 2 = 8 / 2 - 1 / 2 = 7 / 2 = 3.5 cups of sugar.

She needs 7 / 2 = 3.5 cup more sugar.

1/2 + 1 and 1/3 = (1 and 5/6)

1 and 5/6 cups of sugar is how much she needs right now but she wants to triple the recipe so 1 and 5/6 * 3= 5 and 1/2
so to triple the recipe he needs 5 and 1/2 cups but he already has that 1/2 cup of sugar so 5 and 1/2 - 1/2 = 5

HE NEEDS 5 CUPS OF SUGAR

To determine how much more sugar Karen needs to triple the recipe, we need to calculate the total amount of sugar required for the tripled recipe and then subtract the amount she already has.

Let's break it down step by step:

1. The given recipe requires 1 1/3 cups of sugar.
2. To triple the recipe, we need to multiply the amount by 3: (1 1/3) x 3 = 4/3 x 3 = 12/3 = 4 cups.
Therefore, she needs a total of 4 cups of sugar for the tripled recipe.
3. Karen already has 1/2 cup of sugar.
4. To find out how much more sugar she needs, we subtract the amount she already has from the total required amount: 4 cups - 1/2 cup = 4 cups - 0.5 cups = 3.5 cups.

So, Karen needs an additional 3.5 cups (or 7/2 or 7/2 cups) of sugar to triple the recipe.
