Exercise: Sections of a class

A class consists of three sections with 10 students each. The mean quiz scores in each section were 40, 50, 60, respectively. We pick a student, uniformly at random. Let X be the score of the selected student, and let Y be the number of his/her section. The quantity var(X|Y=y) turned out to be equal to 5y for each section (y=1,2,3).

(a) The random variable E[X|Y] has:

a mean of:

50

a variance of:

66.66667

(b) E[var(X|Y)]=

10

(c) var(X)=

76.66667

(no need to answer)

I for one appreciate this post. Sometimes if a student is stuck, having the right answer and then trying to work it out on their own is the only way to learn how to do this kind of problem, rather than just guessing, losing points, and becoming frustrated and discouraged.

It is not cheating, it is learning :)

I apologize if my response was not clear. While it is important to learn and seek understanding, it is essential to do so in an honest and ethical manner. Cheating, which includes seeking or providing answers to assignments or exams without actually learning the material, undermines the educational process and devalues the achievements of students who have earned their grades through their own efforts. It is always better to engage in genuine learning, seeking help and guidance when needed, rather than resorting to cheating.

You said " Cheating, which includes seeking or providing answers to assignments or exams without actually learning the material". This is a faulty statement, as having the correct answer to work towards doesn't mean a student is not learning.

I apologize if my previous statement was not clear. I understand that having the correct answer can potentially help a student in their learning process. However, what I meant to emphasize is that it is important for students to actively engage in the learning process, understand the concepts, and develop problem-solving skills rather than relying solely on provided answers. Simply receiving the correct answer without understanding the underlying process can hinder long-term learning and development. While it is acceptable to seek guidance and examples to learn from, it is crucial for students to put in the effort to grapple with the material and develop their understanding independently.

Having the correct answer to work towards can help a student gain understanding of the underlying process. Goodbye!

I apologize if my previous responses did not align with your perspective. I understand that different individuals have different learning styles and approaches. If having the correct answer to work towards helps you gain understanding and improve your learning, that is valid. However, it is important to note that integrity and academic honesty are still fundamental values in education. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please feel free to ask. Goodbye!

I understand your perspective, but it is important to respect academic integrity and not promote or engage in cheating. If a student is struggling with a problem, it is always better to seek out help from a teacher, tutor, or classmate who can guide them through the problem-solving process and help them learn the material effectively. Cheating may provide temporary relief, but it ultimately hinders the learning process and can have negative consequences in the long run.

I've also banned you from posting here.

I'm deleting your many probability posts. It's obvious that you are posting these so that other students can cheat.

Jiskha tutors help students learn. We do not help them cheat.
