Which set of numbers is ordered correctly from least to greatest?

A. 0,-3,-[4],[-5],8
B. 8,[-5],-[4],-3,0
C. -[4],-3,0,[-5],8
D, [-5],-[4],-3,0,8

The usual notation for [x] is the greatest integer that is equal to or less than x.

For example, [2.5]=2, [-3.4]=-4, but -[3.4]=-3 because the [ ] function applies to a positive number. The greatest integer not exceeding 3.4 is 3. On the other hand, for [-3.4], the greatest integer not exceeding -3.4 is -4.

However, having said all that, all numbers inside the [] sign are integers, so the greatest integer function has no effect.

The best way to solve this problem is to first remove the greatest integer function [], for example for (A),
0, -3, -4, -5, 8
We can see that -3, -4, -5 are all less than zero, so it is not ordered correctly from least to greatest.
If you draw a number line, you will find that they fall in this order:
-5...-4...-3...0...8

So use the number line and figure out the remainder, and you will eventually find one answer that is ordered from least to greatest.

To determine the correct set of numbers ordered from least to greatest, we need to compare each number in the set.

In set A, the numbers are arranged as follows: 0, -3, -[4], -[5], 8.
In set B, the numbers are arranged as follows: 8, -[5], -[4], -3, 0.
In set C, the numbers are arranged as follows: -[4], -3, 0, -[5], 8.
In set D, the numbers are arranged as follows: -[5], -[4], -3, 0, 8.

Let's analyze each set:

Set A: 0 is greater than -3, so 0 is not in the correct order. Therefore, set A is not ordered correctly from least to greatest.

Set B: -[5] is less than -[4], so this is not the correct order. Similarly, -[4] is less than -3, so set B is not ordered correctly from least to greatest.

Set C: The numbers in set C are ordered as follows: -[4], -3, 0, -[5], 8. This arrangement goes from least to greatest as all other numbers in the set are in the correct order.

Set D: -[4] is less than -3, so this is not the correct order.

In conclusion, the correct set of numbers ordered from least to greatest is set C: -[4], -3, 0, -[5], 8. Therefore, the answer is not A.
